Inserting column breaks into a label

I need to print labels with two columns. The first column contains a number between 1 and 99, the second column consists of two lines. I insert a "manual column break" after the database-field that supplies the number so as to switch to the second column for its database fields. However, the column break is not honoured in this case. I have tested the situation using a "normal" A4-format page and it works fine in that case. Any ideas?
